At TaLe, we believe that the best way to understand coffee is to experience it where it begins — at the source. On our recent trip to Karnataka, we had the privilege of visiting two of India’s most respected estates, Balanoor Estate and Badra Estate, and cupping coffees right where they were grown and processed.
Why Cupping at the Source Matters
Cupping at the estate itself gave us a deeper perspective on the relationship between processing, terroir, and flavor. While we may not always cup every lot at origin, having this opportunity reinforced why direct connections with producers are so valuable for both domestic and international buyers.
At Balanoor Estate
Balanoor, with a legacy of over 150 years, is known for producing both Arabica and Robusta of exceptional quality. During our cupping session, we explored coffees that revealed bright acidity, floral notes, and a clean, structured cup. It was a clear reflection of the estate’s precision in cultivation and processing.
At Badra Estate
In Chikmagalur, Badra Estate showcased its innovative spirit through experimental processes alongside traditional washed coffees. On the cupping table, we found juicy, fruit-forward naturals and smooth, chocolate-toned washed Arabicas — proof of how diverse and expressive Indian coffees can be.
What This Means for Our Buyers
By cupping at the source, even selectively, we:
- Strengthen our understanding of each estate’s approach.
- Build closer relationships with producers.
- Gain insights to better match coffees with the needs of roasters and importers, both in India and abroad.
Serving Domestic & Export Markets
For Indian roasters and cafés, we’re committed to bringing traceable, estate-level coffees that elevate the cup quality for your customers.
For international importers and roasters, we curate lots that showcase the depth and diversity of Indian coffee, with the confidence that comes from having tasted them at the source.
Looking Ahead
Our journey to Balanoor and Badra reminded us why we chose coffee: it’s not just a product, it’s a craft. While not every lot may be cupped on-site, whenever we have the opportunity, we take it — because it helps us bring more authenticity, knowledge, and trust to every partnership.
At TaLe, our mission is simple: to connect people with India’s finest coffees — locally and globally — cup by cup.
